Pantone announces 2012 Color of the Year
Tangerine Tango
As we have discussed in class, Pantone plays a major role in evolving color preferences. Their Color Council forecasts the future color palettes that will be used in fashion, household effects, paint, and even the skins for electronics. Although these future colors are known to manufacturing and fashion designers for some time (they pay for the knowledge), we mere mortals get the news round now.
Why is this announcement so important?
After Christmas, we should see Tangerine Tango merchandise show up en masse. We also should see a focus on Latin American motifs in advertising and home decoration articles. The color may also show up in corporate communications items such as marketing inserts, and on-statement messages (as long as it doesn’t complete clash with the dominant Brand colour).
Staying with happy energy
It is interesting that the new color is not a major shift from last year’s Honeysuckle; a hue that is contiguous with its predecessor but with a little less brilliance. Tangerine Tango is a reddish orange, which continues to ‘provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward’. In other words, 2012 will not be a great economic year so we better be cheerful with our colors.

How can I use this information
If you are in Direct Mail, you should be introducing the color (where possible) in communication pieces. In Transaction Mail, you may want to choose ‘lifestyle’ photos that feature this color. And most important for those of you who want to impress the boss or client; get a couple of fashion accessories (ties, scarfs, iPhone cases) that feature the color.
